Donald Duncan Announced as Next Asheboro City Manager

Mr. Donald Duncan has been appointed as Asheboro City Manager. Mr. Duncan will join the City of Asheboro on March 17, 2025. Mr. Duncan has 22 years of experience as a North Carolina city and county manager. For the past three years, he served as Caldwell County Manager. For 15 years he served as the City Manager of Conover. He has a comprehensive background spanning municipal governance, community development, financial management, collaborative leadership, policy advocacy, and ethical leadership and accountability.

Throughout his career, Mr. Duncan has left a significant mark in each position he has held. During his tenure in Conover, he implemented pioneering economic development initiatives to attract substantial investments and fostered crucial partnerships. His expertise also extends to transportation, where he played pivotal roles in enhancing regional transit systems and spearheading local transportation improvement plans. His leadership has been instrumental in implementing comprehensive policies that have bolstered employee satisfaction and organizational efficiency. Contributions to the communities he has served include assisting to establish the first local Railroad Authority in North Carolina, and establishment of the Manufacturing Solutions Center, a public-private partnership that enables business and government to come together and share costs of expensive testing, which reduces costs to do business.

Mr. Duncan’s commitment to public service is evident through his active involvement in community organizations and his receipt of numerous awards and recognitions for his leadership and sustainability efforts. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Appalachian State University.

Duncan, 47, will join the Asheboro staff of experienced professionals and oversee 383 municipal employees who serve the public daily and provide comprehensive municipal services, making Asheboro one of the most desirable communities in North Carolina. Asheboro has enjoyed stability in the position of City Manager. Three City managers have served the community for the past 55 years. Retiring City Manager John Ogburn has served for the past 24 years.
